What are theory X and theory Y?

    Douglas McGregor formulated Theory X and Theory Y, which suggests two aspects of human behavior at work, this theory was discovered in 1960. The positive behavior is called as Theory Y and the one which is negative is known as the Theory of X. There are certain assumptions on both theories. Theory X:- >> Employees would show dislike for work and will avoid it whenever possible. >>Since the employee does not want to work, he must be persuaded, compelled, or warned with punishment so as to achieve organizational goals. A close supervision is required on part of managers. The managers adopt a more dictatorial style. >>People prefer to be directed, do not want responsibility, and have little or no ambition. >>People seek security above all else. Theory Y:- >>Employees can perceive their job as relaxing and normal. They exercise their physical and mental efforts in an inherent manner in their jobs. >> They are not required to be pushed at every moment, they will exercise self-direction if they are committed to the objectives. >> Employees learn to accept and seek responsibility and they do have the potential. >>If the job is rewarding and satisfying, then it will result in employees’ loyalty and commitment to organization.
