Energy Saving Light Bulbs work in the same way as fluorescent lights, passing an electric current through gas in a tube to make the tube's coating glow brightly. In contrast, traditional incandescent bulbs work by heating a filament inside a bulb of inert gas, which generates proportionately more heat than they do light. This difference in technology means that energy saving lightbulbs consume on average around 80% less energy than ordinary light bulbs and last between 8 - 12 times as long.
