'Bristol' is one of the oldest cities in England and history is linked with the sea. It was a port for many years and also played a big part in the slave trade and industries of tobacco. The floating harbor was created a permanent body of water in 1809 with the help of locks in the River Avon and by making the 'new cut' as the new course of the River. The docks ceased to be used commercially in the 1970s, when the docks at Avonmouth were created. Then the area of harbourside has seen regeneration on a large scale as a residential and cultural quarter. Nowadays the city has a large student population with Bristol University, receiving its Royal Charter in 1909.
