The first man made satellite that orbited the moon was Luna 10 from Russia. It was launched on 31st march 1966 and it went into orbit on 3rd April 1966, last contact with it was on 30th May 1966. If you do not count the Apollo missions, which were manned flights, believe it or not it took another 40 years before man sent a permanent satellite to orbit the moon. This was done by Japan in October 2007.The satellite is called Kaguya. China followed this satellite launch in less than one month later on 5th November 2007 with the Chang'E1.0.
