The very first Element discovered was "Phosphorus". It was discovered by Hennig Brand in 1649 . He was a bankrupt German merchant and this made him try to discover the Philosopher's Stone. Actually at that time it was a mythical object that was supposed to turn inexpensive base metals into gold.

Copper was probably the first metal mined and crafted by man. Its earliest estimates of discovery of copper suggest around 9000 B.C. in the middle-east.

Actually there were nine elements known to ancient man. They were gold (pictured), silver, copper, iron, lead, tin, mercury, sulfur, and carbon. These are elements that exist in pure form or that could be purified using relatively simple means.

i think the first element discovered by man was copper (it was mined and crafted) It was originally obtained as a native metal and later from the smelting of ores. Earliest estimates of the discovery of copper suggest around 9000 BC in the Middle East.Copper beads dating from 6000 BC have been found in Çatal Höyük, Anatolia.
