The electron was discovered by J.J. Thompson in 1897 and assigned the negative charge. A team of British physicists was also involved in this process. They together performed experiments on cathode rays and found that cathode rays are very unique particles as compared to atoms, waves or molecules.
Ernest Rutherford discovered the proton in 1918. He experimented the alpha particles by shooting them to nitrogen gas, the scintillation detectors showed him the signatures of hydrogen nuclei. Then he determined that the place from where hydrogen is coming which is nitrogen and nitrogen contains hydrogen nuclei.
