Vlad Drakulya, the Impaler who was born in Transylvania (Romania) in the winter of 1431 and died a perfectly normal, human death 46 years later. This perfectly normal human was later referred to as Dracula but in real life he was Vlad III and he became famous for resisting the Turks and fighting against the expansion of the Ottoman Empire; since his enemies were vicious, cruel soldiers, he developed a habit of impaling them (it was this unusual form of resistance that must have inspired Bram Stoker when he wrote the novel Dracula in 1897). His dad, Vlad Dracul was vested into the royal Order of the Dragon*and as such would have been a Dracul which is probably where the surname came from (bear in mind that royals didn’t need surnames); a son of Dracul would have been called Dracula (in Romanian the word dracul also means devil so you can imagine that any writer could have made a mistake when he translated the name).

Vlad Dracula also named Tepes, was probably born in Sighisoara, Transylvania, in 1431.He was also a member of the Basarab dynasty; the House of Draculesti. There are several opinions about him Some see him as a sadistic madman who liked to wash his hands in human blood, some people call him a most vivid example of Machiavelli`s Prince, some a hero of Christianity and some a defender of a small country and of his people in very hard times. He was a ruler from the gallery of the absolutist European rulers at his time and a fighter for the independence of his country just like the other rulers of the Balkans.
