    For the first time Nobel Prizes were awarded 1901, there were five different headings of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology/Medicine, Literature and Peace. So actually there are 5 answers to your question, unless you are being ultra-specific and want the name of the first person who actually had their name read out and went up on the rostrum to collect their award, But it was one of the following five: Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (Physics) Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff (Chemistry) Emil Adolf von Behring (Physiology or Medicine) Sully Prudhomme (Literature) Jean Henry Dunant & Frederic Passy (Peace)

    6 medals were awarded in 1901 at the first award ceremony. The Physics prize went to Rontgen, the Chemistry to van t'Hoff, the Peace prize to Henry Dunant and Frederic Passy,the Medicine prize to Behring and the Literature prize to Sully Prudhomme.
