A file extension tells that what type of data is contained in the file and it enables the operating system to choose the right or proper application to open the file, without examining the data contained in the file.

    For Example : -

    >> for image the extension is file.jpg which is compressed using JPEG compression, and it can be opened by graphics program.

    >> for an audio the extension is file.wav which is in the Waveform Audio File Format, and it can be opened using a sound or multimedia application.
