Why is literature a prism?

A prism allows to see an altered picture. It is like a window, it distorts the light, separate it into two colors.
The literature also provides us with a look at another time in the same way. It proves us with a way to look different culture and even a hypothetical future. The way to present the setting and characters which the author use will color our view of that period. That is why literature is like a prism.
