Why do we sacrifice beauty for other things?

There is the debate of function and design. It is my feeling that function is primary. That no matter how beautiful something is in design if it does not function as desired it is worthless. Or as the adage goes: "Beauty is only skin deep" I liken it to cars- I don't care how ugly it is if I am the first one across the finish line!
