How do I get started with event videography such as conferences, seminars, and presentation?

This industry is so unique that I had trouble finding answers with google and YouTube. That being said, here are the questions I'm have trouble finding answers to. What are some ways I can get my first pay gig conference, seminar, or presentation? Who should I approach? What's the best way to approach them? (i.e. Phone, or email) How do you find your clients?

The best way to approach or find your clients would be social media, word of mouth. Videography could be weddings.

You start by working for videographers...to learn the ropes and the business. Once you can afford things like insurance (which you will need in order to be working at these events) and your own equipment (which can easily be $10k+ for a proper videographer), you go into business for your own. You advertise, use social media and word of mouth. Start with people you might know in some of the companies to whom you are soliciting.

The first question is - do you have a portfolio of past work you can show somebody? If not, you are going to have problems competing against similar people with experience (put yourself in your client's shoes - would you spend that amount of money for someone with no proven experience doing the job?). If you have a portfolio, then you have past clients (even unpaid) - you should be asking them to provide reviews on places like yelp (make sure you are on there as a business), other social media platforms, etc. Get a Facebook page, make a web site, and definitely get on Instagram (when you find clients, ask if they will allow you to post shots from your videos). If I am assuming you have no portfolio or past clients (again, even unpaid) then your best bet is to locate video-graphers in your geographical and get a job with them. You can build a portfolio and experience that you can take with you while learning the business from the ground up (pay careful attention to how they get clients, etc.).

Advertise that you cover events, like weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc. Event centers are all the latest rage in conversions from barns, warehouses, old mansions to places where large parties can take place.
