What is the job market like for accounting?

I'm thinking of becoming an accountant. What is the job market like? If I got my bachelors in accounting and had relevant experience, would I have good job security?

Excellent. I do not know a person who has studied accounting who is unemployed. My accountant is always busy and refers new clients to people who used to work for her but now have their own businesses. This is the thing about accounting...most people are afraid of math and think numbers hate them...so they do not even want to balance their own bank accounts. Do it.

Very good. Check the BLS.gov website for accounting and related jobs and you will see what the hiring expectations are for this next year.

Likely answer is yes.... unless the firm you work for does an Arthur Andersen then you will be about as toxic as Chernobyl. If you want added income and job security get a CPA license eventually.

Depends on where you are and what type of accounting you want to do. At larger companies, lower (and even mid) level number-pushing accounting jobs get outsourced to the Philippines, India, or other such places. Jobs still exist in plenty, but you need to make sure you position yourself well. Jobs for CPAs, accounting systems jobs, and other more decision making jobs rarely get outsourced and are typcially in greater demand.
