Can you play Japanese ps1 games on an American ps3 ?

PS1 discs are still region locked as they would be on an original PS1 system, although I believe downloadable titles do not have this distinction, so if there's a Japanese PS1 game you want to play, you might be able to get it from the Japanese PSN if you make an account and buy a prepaid card in Yen.
