Wanting to put vhs tapes on dvd via the computer, whats the truth in doing so. and what product would be used if so.?

I use a VHS to DVD all in one. The unit plays the VHS tape and the DVD recorder records what's on the tape. Then, you can put the DVD into computer CD drive and copy/edit.

There are many options, most include an adapter that runs from your VHS to a USB port and runs capture software on your computer.
