I got audited by Massachusetts but it was from 2015?

I just got a letter from the commonwealth of Massachusetts. It says that I’m being audited because I failed to report the correct personal income tax for January 2015 to December 2015. But I only owe them $60. I don’t understand why they would send me this 4 years later. I think I had liberty tax do my taxes for that year. What should I do?

Pay the $60 I doubt that it's an actual audit - more like their computers just churned up a mismatch in reported income and taxes paid. I've dealt with these people and it's easier to pay the money. Now, if you can actually prove that you don't owe the money - go for it. Otherwise - pay it.

Yep, that’s Massachusetts for you. They don’t play around with their tax money.

just try your best and if there is no other way then pay it up,

Find your copy of the return and compare it to the letter. The states are usually slower in matching up W2s and 1099s to the return. They have 3 years from the due date to do so. If you can't find the copy or get a copy from Liberty, then just pay the bill.

They can audit you for a number of years after the tax year- 6, I think. That's because it takes them quite a while to check back tax forms. If I were you, I'd just pay the $60. But you could go to them with all your information from that year and fight it.
