Another way to phrase this sentence?

" ... as the presidential elections become a subject of mockery, due to the misplaced "amiability" of the candidates. Being well-liked by one group of voters IS expected, but when the elections become a source of debacle, rather than discussion ... " We're not allowed to use is/are/was/were/has/have etc. words, and I don't know how to replace the "is" in the second sentence without using "remains". (E.G. Being well-liked by one group of voters REMAINS expected ...) Since duplicates aren't recommended and I've already used remains, any formal word will help Thanks! -11 AP Eng.

We expect each candidate to be well-liked by one group of voters, but when the elections become a source of debacle, rather than discussion ... "
