How come war of the worlds (1953) is still suspenseful?

Other action/thriller sci fi films from those times don't usually hold up in the thrilling suspense part. But the original war of the worlds makes you feel kinda threaten by those machines. And keeps you wondering of what gonna happen next. Why is that?

It's a well made movie. The effects are very dated, but the narrative, the acting, the directing are all top notch and still hold up to this day.

That's what makes it a classic. And there is another film from those times like that, The Thing From Another World (1951).

The underlying theme, Alien Invasion, is just as applicable today as it was when the original movie was made.

Probably because it's adapted from a very well written book - like The Day of the Triffids.
