Didn't the government shutdown affect national parks too?

Yes National Parks employees are, mostly, furloughed. Some of the parks are still open but without staffing and access to facilities,

Yes, of course. There are piles and piles of trash all over because no one is there to take it away and all the trash cans have overflowed. You can't get into the restrooms and sometimes you can't even get into the parks themselves. This is only one small part of the government shutdown.

You still have newspapers?? Yes, it affected them big-time, mostly by way of trash piling up. Volunteer groups have been helping pick up the trash.
