What kind of flooring on concrete slab?

I have a house in NJ. The second floor foyer and 3 bedrooms have hardwood flooring. the stair going down leads to 14' x 36' kitchen *** living room. This one has kitchen space 14'x 12' and has just plain plywood there. The rest of this kitchen *** living room has hardwood floor. Go down 4 steps and we 4 big size rooms. All these are on concrete slab. I am thinking of adding new flooring to these 4 rooms. I want the ground floor of house should look the same. Any flooring suggestion ? Thanks

You can put tile, carpet, wood, laminate or even plank vinyl. My daughter recently put plank on her floors. It looks very good.

It all depends on moisture! Concrete hold moisture but it is not always visible because it evaporates at the surface. Place a piece of plastic on the floor for a week and see if any moisture builds up under it. If it does, you will need to seal the floor with a water blocker paint (such as "Dry-loc") before putting anything down other than ceramic tile. It also depends on what you are going to use it for! Tile would be the coldest in winter! Carpet being the warmest! A floating floor with locking planks would be your best choice with an insulating layer beneath it.

You can raise the floor with framing, insulate between the studs, and install a subfloor and hardwood flooring just like the rest of the house.

I suggest you consult a Tile/carpet store that has some who has worked there a long time. I have carpet (with pad) on part of my lower level (Above ground level) and also have laminate flooring on much of the common area. Both work very well. The big difference is that the laminate floors are very cold in the Winter. Wood has to be laid on level floor.

If you want to put hardwood directly on concrete, you can glue down engineered hardwood planks directly onto a concrete or tile subfloor. It is best to have a professional or someone with some installation knowledge do this. It can also be floated. It is not 100% hardwood (the top 1/2 inch is) , but has a composite wood base, and can handle some underneath humidity. It is not vinyl laminate. I just did this in Florida -- with Hallmark Novella Twain Oak and it looks great. Take a look at the photo below.

I'd just leave it with concrete.

Do want to know what you should put on it or what kind of flooring you already have on your concrete?
