If you both did just the tiniest bit of research you would soon discover that Scotland is a country in its own right but is a member of the United Kingdom which is made up primarily of England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. All these are individual countries.

Scotland IS a country. It has its own legal system and currency system. It is one of the constituent nations of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is NOT a province nor subordinate colony of England. Most nationalist Scots would be horrified if you thought Scotland was NOT a country.

The thing is that Scotland was independent until 1707, so it WAS a sovereign country and there isn't really any other word to use than "country". But since 1707, the sovereign country is the United Kingdom and Scotland is part of it. Scotland does have a parliament and government BUT it was the UK government and parliament that put them there, and it could take that away if it wanted. And the Scottish Parliament and government don't have power over everything - there is much that stays with the UK Parliament and government, such as defence and foreign relations. So Scotland is not sovereign over itself.
