A Londoner, Major Walter Wingfield, invented a game called Sphairistikè (Greek for "playing ball") in 1873, from which modern tennis evolved. Wingfield's game was played on an hourglass-shaped court and created a sensation in Europe, the United States, and even China.

Its a derivative game from 'real tennis' which was invented 7-800 years ago,by the French I think...I used to watch it on Transworld Sport,quite a cool to watch,still don't know the rules or who came up with the game.
