Liberia is a country in Africa, created by former black slaves from the United States. Starting in 1822 many freed or escaped slaves had been resettled on the coast of Weest Africa, many having their passage funded by the American Colonization Society. The country declared independence in 1847, making them the first republic in the history of Africa.
