Why can't I get middle splits/tips??

I stretch very often and can do my right and left oversplits as well as scorpion and almost needle. I put a ton of focus on my hips and stretches specifically for middle splits but I'm not seeing any improvement. I'm naturally pretty flexible, so when I stretch often, I improve very quickly on everything except middle splits. Also, some hip stretches are very painful for me and not in the same way as other stretches. It feels like I shouldn't be doing it so it's hard to push myself. Any tips??? It's always embarrassing stretching with friend and being over a foot off the ground meanwhile, I can do over two foot oversplits with my left and right legs...

It sounds like you may just have a hip structure that will not permit straddle splits. I'm surprised you wouldn't get closer than a foot off the ground though. I would suggest you try rolling your hips back and forward in your splits to try to find a hip angle that will allow a little more movement. Also make sure you turn out as far as you can. There are two possible ways into box splits and you might find one easier than the other, or make some progress by working both. One way is to turn your legs out and then move them out sideways in plane with your torso, the other is to fold at the hip to a 90 degree pike, then straddle out to the sides.
