Hannibal surprised the Romans by marching his army overland from Iberia (Spain) to cross the Alps and invade Roman Italy from the north.

They went through the mountains in the Alps. Was very impressive considering the fact he had elephants, thousands of soldiers and horses and all their equipment. Was a complete mystery how he did it and the only figured it out recently.

On elephantback.

On foot for the most part. Only the leaders rode horses.

They didn't. They landed in what is now France, and tried to enter Italy through the Alps, where they were stopped.
