Been There, Done That.

California requires you to either pay full fee, or register the car "NON-OP", and the non-op fee is cheap, like 10 or 20 dollars a year. If you owe money on the car, it must be insured for fire or theft. If you don't insure it, your lender will insure it, and add the cost to your loan with interest.

No. You do not

You don't. In order to get it off your insurance though, you have to turn the plates in to the DMV and then send a copy of the pink slip to your insurance. If you want to put it back on the road you would need to re-register and re-insure it.

No

are you still paying for it? the answer is that your loan requires you to maintain insurance on it. Whether or not it can be unregistered on your property depends on city, county or HOA regulations.

You don't have to register it if you do not operate it or store it on a roadway. If it is paid off with no lien on the title you also do not have to insure it if it is on your property and never operated on public roadways. Be sure to turn in the plates of you cancel insurance.

If you are not going to drive the car, you do not have to renew the registration or insurance. However you will be unable to drive the car. And if you ever try to sell it you may have difficulties as you usually have to have a registration and title to sell a car.

In many states, you don't have to register or insure car not being used, parked on private property. UK posters noted some kind on 'non operating' form that has to be filled out -SORN? A few cities will ticket for 'nuisance' if non license vehicle is 'visible' to public way- OHIO, Cincinatti? SO, unless you're in UK, not likely to need license plates renewed, registration, As for turning in title and registrqation to DMV?- Not locally. What state would require that? Can't Legally drive on public way without current registration, insurance-- but non operable, under restoration, needing repair or waiting for drivers license to be re issued after drunk driving or payment of child support . various reasons to not use it--no requirement locally or neighboring states. Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa.

You don't have to. What you do have to do is inform the dmv that the car is non-op.
