Computer speakers Vs mini stereo?

I have a TV that I am putting in my office. Downstairs on the main TV is a great 5.1 surround system. I have laptop in the office that I need to plug into speakers so I can listen to music while I wait. I also want better speakers for the TV but do not need 5.1. I see two options for connecting speakers to the laptop and TV, using the old JVC mini stereo (FS-SD7) that I have that also has a subwoofer output or connect or getting some used computer speakers with a subwoofer off craigslist. What would you recommend and why?

Computer speakers are a BAD fit for any TV. Here's why: When you sit at a computer, you sit VERY CLOSE to it and it's monitor, say, within one foot. So any computer speakers have only to be decent within that very short distance. But, if you want to sit, say, six feet away from an actual TV, your speakers have to move the air six times farther, and air doesn't move like lazer beams. So, sound spreads out all the more, the farther away from the speakers you sit. Thus, computer speakers sould AWFUL when you're six or more feet from them.

Go for the mini stereo system. If the main speakers have woofers that are large enough (at least 6", and preferably 8"), a "subwoofer" will not necessarily be worthwhile.
