How to know how you sound to others?

Is there a technique to know how you sound to others. Without recording. If recording is an option how far away should I be from the recorder

Only by recording yourself and playing it back can you really know what others hear. This is because when you speak, a lot of what you hear comes through your own head, overwhelming whatever you can hear from a monitor speaker or through headphones. By recording yourself, you completely remove the head-sound factor, so what you get on playback is as truthful as the equipment used will allow. For an ordinary recorder, the mic should be 6 to 18 inches from your mouth.
