Advice on filling mice entry points?

I am having an issue with mice coming into my home and I keep going round filling holes with steel wool but they keep coming in still. I have found massive holes behind my gas fireplace - is steel wool safe to put behind here?

I would look into cement mix or something similar to fill the holes.

Steel wool is ok for smaller openings (about 1" in diameter or less), but for larger openings I'd use something else. Better yet, seal up the openings altogether.

Place alphatose based mouse poison near the holes. This stuff is humane as they go to sleep and never wake up. Your wire wool strategy is not going to work as they will ether dislodge it or create other access points.
