NATO was formed for the mutual defence of western Europe and North America.

It is a country alliance before there is a war. If any in the organization is attacked the rest will engage to help repel any aggression. A psychological ploy to make Russia or any one to think twice before attacking a weak partner. The answer is more than just yes.

Perhaps. Depends on who you ask. But it is a mutual defence treaty- any state in Nato that gets invaded, well, NATO policy is to treat that as an attack against EVERY member of NATO. So, if Russia were to send troops into say Latvia, then Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, France, Ireland, Britain... would act as if Russia had invaded THEM as well.

Yes. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. NATO was the first peacetime military alliance the United States entered into outside of the Western Hemisphere.
