How long should a baby stay with a diaper?

A diaper should be changed as soon as it has been soiled. A clean diaper can be left on until the baby soils it. The baby can wear a diaper 24 hours per day - provided the diaper is changed each time it is soiled - which means the average baby will use between 7 to 10 diapers per day - but will always be wearing a diaper. The average baby/toddler will potty train between the age of 2 to 3 years old and then stop using diapers. If a baby develops a very severe diaper rash (which usually happens from not changing baby soon enough when they have soiled their diaper) then it might be recommended to allow the baby to play with no diaper (bare butt) for a few hours each day to try to help the rash heal.
