Polar vortex doesn't mean what you think it means.

Certainly polar vortex. Look at the weather maps over a period of a week or two and you will see the cold air flowing south from the arctic and gradually moving west to east. Ahead of and behind the cold areas, the winds are blowing from south to north, bringing warmer air.
