White Americans are of European heritage. That comprises more than English ancestry. Many white Americans have French, German, Italian, Eastern European, Greek, Scandinavian or other European ancestry. Or they may descend from Irish, or Scottish or Welsh immigrants from the UK. The Spanish arrived in North America before the British did, so a fair number of Americans have Spanish ancestry. WASP does specifically to refer to people of British, mostly English, ancestry, but it's loosely applied to whites of northern European (and non-Catholic) background.
