What is calling someone an "asshat" to insult, term possible origination in the 1970s. Is it an actual hat of an ***?

I had never heard the term until an early season of 'Modern Family' when I heard the Jay Pritchett character refer to someone by that name. Maybe 2010 or so? I assumed it was dreamed up by the show's writers, because broadcast TV does not allow the word xxxhole. This was common in TV shows for years, because on 'Happy Days' they always said 'sit on it' instead of 'stick it up your xxx.' This is just a guess.

Mr. Interesting

I have never heard that one. And I been around.
