Probably was an extension of rounders, which was an extension, as it were, of cricket- which has something similar to bases in that it has 2 creases you have to touch to score a run on a batted ball in play...

In 3rd grade when you should been learning the difference between their, they're and there, you should also have been introduced to baseball. THERE are 3 bases and Home Plate.
