There are no direct flights from Toronto to Sydney, it's simply too far for current planes to handle (a flight could probably make it but there's no room for error if something goes wrong, so airlines won't/can't do it). Air Canada has flights without connections, but they stop in Vancouver on the way. Other flights will usually connect via San Francisco or LAX. If Toronto were closer, then the connections would be made there instead. I also can't picture being stuck in a plane for the 19 hours it'd take to go that far.

Uh, no. Didn't you look at a map? Or check some flight times? All you have to do is put 'vancouver sydney flying time' in your search bar, or any other cities you want.

One assumes you mean Sydney, Australia. There is a Sydney on Vancouver Island, very close to Vancouver, and another one in Nova Scotia, across the country. Vancouver is a fair bit closer to Sydney, Australia than Toronto is.
