Only the sales tax would be deductible--on schedule A as part of your itemized deductions.

You don't, unless you paid so much in sales tax that it's over what you paid in state income taxes and you can also itemize, which is unlikely.

You show it on schedule A instead of state income tax.

Unless you have enough deductions to use the itemized deduction instead of the standard, you don't need to worry about it. If you itemize, you have the choice of using your state income taxes paid (if you owed last yr or paid estimates + your state withholding) OR sales tax.

If you itemize your deductions, then you can deduct EITHER state income tax OR state sales tax, but not both. If you choose to deduct state sales tax, you can deduct EITHER the actual amount that you can prove with receipts, or a standard calculation based on your income and the local tax rate where you live. If you choose the standard calculation, you can add tax paid on major purchases such as a car on top of the standard amount. So its possible, but there are a lot of "IF" statements to get to the point of actually saving money on federal income tax because of sales tax paid on a car. Most people won't get any benefit. But you can certainly put the amount into turbo tax and it will do all the calculations for you to see if you can get any benefit.

Unless you own a business and the car was purchased for business use, purchasing the car is a NONEVENT for income tax purposes.

It is VERY unlikely it will do you any good on your income tax. only if you itemize and deduct sales tax instead of state and local income taxes.
