Should I be embarrassed about getting a filling at 16?

I’ve always had to get fillings like a lot when I was little. And I’ve gotten better at taking care of my teeth. 6 months ago I had an appointment and had to get like 3 fillings because ig some fell out or something. I know one of them fell out from THAT time but I have ANOTHER cavity on one of my molars. And since last time I’ve really really been taking care of my teeth. I brush I floss and I do mouthwash. And yet I still have an added cavity. I feel super embarrassed and a little frustrated bc I really tried to keep up with my teeth. And I have good teeth which is part of why it’s embarrassing that I can’t even keep up with them. I will be 16 in 2 weeks which is around the time I get the filling.

People get fillings at all different ages - there is nothing to be embarrassed about. If you need a filling, you want to go ahead and get it to prevent future pain. It's okay to ask your dentist for tips on how to prevent more cavities in the future and that you are brushing twice a day, flossing every day, etc. and wondering what went wrong. It may even have to do with the natural composition of your saliva and you may be more prone to making cavities than other people. Dentists do not (and should not) embarrass patients about their teeth.

Seriously, as a Nurse Epidemiologist we don't even think about the "e" word. Its not like you're going in for a pelvic exam. Health care professionals focus on whats going on with your teeth and to fix them. Some people are very susceptible to cavities even with good oral care. From here on out and forever more, there is nothing to be embarrassed over.
