I get free electricity and don't steal if from the electric utility. The air temperature in my house is 86F and it is 9F outside and going sub-zero tonight. I am unqualified to answer your question but answered it.

Common Sense

I leave my oil heat on all winter long all day long. Howsoever, I have a programmable thermostat set to a warmer temperature when I am home and a low 60 degrees when I am not home or when I am asleep. I live in a 1850sf house and use about 120 gallons of heating oil per month. This is the first year that I enrolled in an oil delivery Budget Plan. I pay $200 per month for automatic oil delivery. My payments begin in October and end in July. Howsoever, by my calculations, I will have paid for my 2018/2019 oil consumption before July. Perhaps I will get a credit toward next heating season or just lower my monthly payments to reflect my actual oil usage. I find it very affordable for my cash flow to pay $200 a month, rather than cough up almost $600 to fill my tank in one fell swoop.
