Birds are more closely related to dinosaurs like a t-rex, than they are to any mammal. Very few viruses can infect both birds and mammals even if both are warm blooded vertebrates because the body systems have so many differences. some birds can be infected, they just rarely show symptoms and usually recover. Some (few) mammals are also resistant, like the opossum.
