What do you expect buddy? It needs power to operate. A powered subwoofer has a built-in class D amplifier. It needs to plug into a 120-volt power outlet.

Power has to come from somewhere. A powered subwoofer needs an external power source. A subwoofer that is driven solely by the amp is just like the other speakers in the system.
