Refrigerator knocking noise?

Every 30 MINS or so I hear a loud knocking noise (usually 5 or 6 fast knocks) and then it goes away. I have opened the freezer thinking it was the fan but it sounds to be coming from the back and more in the middle of the refrigerator. I have a GE side by side. Does anyone know what could be causing it?

How old is the fridge and how long has this noise been going on? I ask becouse newer fridges makes some really funky sounds. Many also have cheap stamped evaps now, they are leaking about 5 years out. Whirlpool has changed their warranties from 5 years on the sealed systems, to one. I bring that up becouse at certain low pressures icing up happens right before they stop cooling enough. The knocking could be ice build up the evap fan is hitting. Could be the ice maker, drain frozen and such. You might be able to see if it is ice, some you can see enough of the evap through the registers in the back.

Have you ever pulled the frig away from the wall and vacuumed the dust from the condenser coils?

Not sure if this is the same situation as your fridge but knocking noises have been heard from pipes. The sound had neighbors complaining and arguing with each other into the late nights and it also puzzled many others. However, it was eventually traced to air pockets that built up in the pipes and the knocking sound happens when the air escapes with the built up pressure as bubbles.

Refrigerators make many sounds we might expect, such as water dripping, the fan turning on or off or the motor operating.

Ours did that right before it started going out

Turn off the fridge for 2 hours. Noise does not go away, noise not from your fridge. Noise goes away, make sure the fridge is level. Level it with plastic or rubber inserts if it is not. Noise still does not go away, time to call the fridge dude or live with it until the fridge dies.
