You didn't kill them all..... put a pot of jam or bowl of sugar at the other end of your garden and divert them away.

Type of ants dictate how to go about getting rid of them. My go to poison is combat Gel, for carpenter and mid sized black ants. A couple of dabs close to their entrance in their pathways works. For those little ants, I cut 2" sections of straws, put a couple of dabs inside them, spread them along their their paths or the heavy areas i see them.

It's very likely you have ants living within your walls during the cold weather. My exterminator told me that, and he got rid of them at a hefty price. The next time that happened, a few years later, I went to the hardware store and bought an insecticide in a jug with a hose and nozzle attached (I used Beyer brand, but there are others). I followed instructions exactly, and it worked perfectly. I just have to reapply every few years.
