The unhappier someone is, the more their focus is on themselves, to try to fix the tension of their unhappiness. And the more we focus on ourselves, the more neurotic and unhappy we become. Unfortunately, modern culture pushes the idea that happiness comes from things, from relationships too. I guess it sells well and makes money. And it seems like an appealing quick fix: "If only I can find love" or "If only I can get some money" etc. Unfortunately happiness is a state of mind, which means it comes from within. We are not taught how to find it inside ourselves. So most people are unhappy. And the unhappier they are, the more selfish and even the more cruel they can be.
